Statement

I embrace contradictions. My art explores the intersection of the dualities inherent to our Being Human and how they affect our perception of the Divine. My vision is to bring new understandings about the world beyond our sensory perception of it. I aim to expose the relationship between polarities and that which is beyond/within, as I am fascinated by the complexity and richness of life and that which I encounter on a physical and a metaphysical level. Some of the tensions I grapple with include:

positive vs. negative space

physical vs. metaphysical

internal vs. external

universal truth vs. perception of truth

transparency vs. opacity

individual vs. universal

linear vs. cyclical Time

invisible vs. visible

realism vs. abstraction

ordinary vs. extraordinary

charged vs grounded energy

To create my work, I employ a variety of techniques and materials for their inherent effects. Watercolor, mixed media painting, woodblock prints, paintings, monotypes are some ways I’ve found successful expression of my ideas and concepts. I thoroughly research diverse media in order to push the ideas’ possibility of execution. My ongoing practice in carpentry, papermaking, printmaking, ceramics and furniture-making informs my sense of quality, craftsmanship and the handmade. I produce everything by hand: from drawing the sketches to carving and pressing the woodblocks.

I work in layers - simultaneously covering and revealing areas - to demonstrate the complexity, clarity and disparate elements that go into a unified composition. I strive for a multi-faceted effect, like that of a stained-glass window. I want to show a dynamic light radiating from within, not just the traditional natural light that reflects off static surfaces.

I seek out the most simple, reductive and poetic means possible to foster an expansive and open dialogue that illuminates our shared experience. In doing so, my work celebrates differing, alternative and sometimes conflicting viewpoints of Life, Nature and the Divine.
